Softball Splits With Kutztown

KUTZTOWN-- The 16th-ranked Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games with 10th-ranked Kutztown on Friday. The Huskies won the opener 2-1 and dropped the nightcap, 3-0.
In game one the Huskies scored twice in the top of the first inning and made the lead hold up. Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont/Southern Columbia) singled with one out followed by an RBI double from Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport). Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) drew back to back walks to load the bases. Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) then singled in Reed for a 2-0 advantage.
Kutztown got a run back in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-1 game. From there both pitchers worked out of jams with each team stranding 10 runners. Bloomsburg's Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) was able to scatter four hits over the final six innings to earn the win.
The second game saw Kutztown Mary Hoch toss a three-hit shutout at the Huskies as the Golden Bears won 3-0. Bloomsburg left a runner on base in each of the first three innings and five of the seven innings, but could not score. Tara Reed was the tough-luck loser allowing just six and two earned runs in the loss.
Bloomsburg, 29-5, will face Lock Haven on Saturday at 1 p.m.
